LEGO Debuts Its First LGBT+ Set: The Message? 'Everyone Is Awesome'

A few months ago we shared the news that Hasbro had changed Mr Potato Head to Potato Head in a move to inclusivity.

Now, others are following in the footsteps of representation as best-selling toy brand, LEGO announce their new LGBT+ themed set called “Everyone Is Awesome.”

The gorgeous new toy brick set includes a rainbowed array of characters with few defining features; just their crabby LEGO hands, detachable heads and some sick hairstyles! Although, one of which - we think - is a clear nod to fabulous drag Queens, according to Matthew Ashton, creator of this set. Purple figure with an up do? Drag Race UK winner Lawrence Chaney, surely?

The announcement came on Twitter with pictures of the new LEGO set with the caption:

“We’re super excited to reveal our new set – LEGO Everyone is Awesome! Because we celebrate every LEGO builder!”

Ashton is a member of the LGBTQIA community and told The Guardian they wanted the set to represent everyone.

“Growing up as an LGBTQ+ kid, being told what I should play with, how I should walk, how I should talk, what I should wear… the message I always got was that somehow I was wrong.”

LEGO is the best-selling toy, globally and after moves to inclusivity by Barbie and Hasbro, LEGO’s introduction of such a positive, pride-making toy can only mean good things for our LGBTQIA children today and as a way of embedding positivity for the LGBTQIA community at an early age.

The set will be available on 1st June, 2021 in time for Pride celebrations.
