Lesbian Visibility Week: Seven Days To Go

Lesbian Visibility Week (Monday 26th April – Sunday 2nd May) is just over a week away and we’re all geared up for one of the biggest events in the LGBTQ+ calendar ‘powered by’ Diva magazine and Stonewall.

With plenty of events and celebrations, we can’t contain our excitement so we thought we’d share a little sneak peek at what’s coming up.

Lesbian Visibility Week allows us to celebrate the lesbian community, raise awareness of the issues faced and encourage acceptance for those yet to come out. Lesbian Visibility Week was originally Lesbian Visibility Day, which was created in 2008 by Jane Hill and is celebrated annually in April.

Lesbians make up a large section of the LGBT+ community and yet they’re one of the most overlooked groups; they identify as the most isolated group under the LGBT+ umbrella with 87% having reported feeling lonely during lockdown (Source: Just Like Us).

Furthermore, compared to 35% of heterosexual women, 44% of lesbian women and 61% of bisexual women have experienced domestic violence and/or sexual assault (Source: National Coalition). Lesbians are almost half as likely to be out in the workplace as gay male colleagues (Pride Matters).

There are a number of events taking place across Lesbian Visibility Week and many are free.

We’ve selected these events as must-sees, but it’s such a fantastic programme it’s really hard to choose. Our choice of events from the line-up include:

Lesbian Inclusion at Work: Realising our potential (April 27th)

Coming Out Stories (April 28th)

Queer Women of Colour (April 28th)

The Importance of Authentic Literature for LGBTQI Families (April 29th)

Diva Awards take place on Thursday 29th April and this is perhaps the event we’re most excited for because sequins and celebrations are naturally, winners, right? PLUS, Heather Small is performing (which is the event of lockdown really). We’ll keep our votes anonymous, but let’s just say we were happy to see our beloved Lucy Spraggan nominated. Once the winners are announced, we’ll be sharing some love for them so stay tuned at LGBT Money for more celebratory blogs about our fabulous community!

And the last event of the line-up, and NEVER the least, is Diva’s own Pride event. They hosted their own last year for the first time and this year it returns in Lesbian Visibility Week as we see in Summer. There will be a number of performances from celebs including Sinitta, Horse McDonald, Emily Burns, Sara Aalto and more. You can also watch last year’s if you can’t wait another couple of weeks!

See you there!
