Robert Webb v Mermaids: The Aftermath

A stab against transgender children’s charity, Mermaids, from 2018 by Peep Show performer, Robert Webb, has re-surfaced after he appeared on a podcast presented by Jesse Thorn.

Thorn himself is a father of two, one of whom is trans.

Taking its cue from an article by Janice Turner criticising Mermaids, Webb retweeted at the time: 'This won’t make me popular in certain quarters but f*** it – I’m with Janice and I don’t say it often enough. Also @boodleoops also @bindelj I’ve talked to some really nice trans people here & they have my solidarity if they want it. But Mermaids sucks.'

Webb faced a serious backlash, but had to date expressed no regret for the language used against Mermaids.

Thorn picked this up in the podcast asking Webb if he’d contacted Mermaids in the interim. Webb responded: 'It wasn't a conversation that I wanted to carry on getting into because the reaction was so strong. It was as if I had said 'I hate trans children', which of course I don't. That is not how I feel abut the situation. It was critical of the way Mermaids was conducting itself.'

Interestingly, Thorn also posted how 'their (Mitchell ad Webb's) publicity team had asked if we (broadcaster) would consider dropping the segment and re-recording.' The broadcaster refused.

Mermaids has since graciously responded: 'We take some reassurance from Mr Webb's apparent assertion that he now supports affirmative care and accepts he isn't an expert, rightly deferring to those with first-hand experience.'

They have since asked their Twitter followers to RT their 'If you support trans kids' post. We have

and, of course, stand in solidarity with Mermaids and the trans community.
